Climate Protection Advisory Board

Climate protection is also the primary challenge for local politics. The "Fridays for Future" movement has succeeded in bringing the climate crisis to the attention of broad sections of the population. Previously, the Local Agenda 21 Advisory Board (Agenda Advisory Board) dealt with this issue, which is now to expand and continue this work as the Advisory Board for Climate Protection and Sustainable Development (Climate Protection Advisory Board).

The statutes of the Climate Protection Advisory Board were adopted by the City Council on 05.09.2019 and the members were appointed on 02.10.2019.

The Climate Protection Advisory Board consists of 18 voting members, who are made up of

  • nine representatives of the city council
  • three representatives of the Climate and Environment Round Table
  • three experts from the fields of business, nature conservation and social affairs
  • three representatives of the Agenda Association

A deputy can be nominated for each voting member.

The Climate Protection Advisory Board supports and promotes the formulation of action targets and their implementation for the aforementioned topics. In this regard, it supports the work of the city administration and advises the city council. It also issues statements in the interests of climate protection and sustainability on the economic activities of companies over which the city has strategic influence. These are the city's own municipal companies, the municipal utilities and their subsidiaries.

It also makes recommendations on development goals and strategies for the climate protection process in the city of Jena for the coming years. In particular, it helps shape the process of the sustainability strategy for a sustainable Jena and supports its implementation. One focus of this activity will be the updating of the mission statement "Energy and Climate Protection in the City of Jena 2021-2030".

In early August 2019, representatives of the X4F movement (F4F, Parents For Future, Scientists For Future) and the spokesperson of the Local Agenda 21 Advisory Board agreed to expand the Agenda Advisory Board in terms of content and personnel in order to integrate the ideas and demands of the F4F movement in Jena and other stakeholders on climate protection into the municipal decision-making processes. In addition to the sustainable development of the city of Jena, the focus of the advisory board's work is now to be on local climate protection to limit global warming.

The Climate Protection Advisory Board is the body responsible for providing the City of Jena with expert advice on issues relating to sustainability and climate protection. It is independent and its opinions are of a recommendatory nature. The Climate Protection Advisory Board has the right to submit reports and draft resolutions to the City Council via the relevant committees.

The meetings of the Climate Protection Advisory Board are open to the public.
