Residence permit - change of conditions

The application for a change of conditions must be submitted to the Aliens' Registration Office prior to the intended change. The application must be formulated in writing. A decision will be made on the change of conditions.

The residence permit will not be extended.

Change when changing the field of study during studies

Since the residence permit of students usually expires by operation of law if the course of study is changed without the involvement of the Foreigners' Registration Office, an application must be submitted to the Foreigners' Registration Office in advance.

Change when changing the place of work

Whether gainful employment is permitted is already determined by the residence title. If the entry in the residence title reads "gainful employment permitted", any gainful employment is permitted. In this case, no further application is necessary.

If, for example, the entry reads "Employment only permitted with the permission of the foreigners authority", an application must be made to the foreigners authority for permission to take up paid employment. In order for the application to be processed, the specific job offer must be submitted and the employer must be notified as the contact person and the company number.

Before making a decision on this application, the Foreigners' Registration Office must always involve the competent Employment Agency. As a rule, the Employment Agency checks whether preferential employees are available for the intended employment. This procedure can take up to six weeks.

Register with the appointment code

You will receive an appointment code with your appointment. If you are not on time, the appointment will be cancelled. Half an hour before the appointment you can register at the multilingual registration terminal of the Foreigners' Registration Office with the appointment code. You do not need to pull a ticket!

Appointment confirmation is considered a fictitious certificate

If you make your appointment via our online appointment system, you will receive a fictitious certificate which you can print out together with the binding appointment confirmation. This fictitious certificate is valid in Germany and bridges the time between the expiry of the residence permit and the appointment.

• existing electronic residence permit with supplementary sheet
• proof of all academic achievements in the past
• Proof of the crediting of previous achievements for the future subject (confirmation at the examination office)
• current certificate about the future duration of studies taking into account previous achievements (available at the International Office of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena or at the Student Secretariat of the Ernst-Abbe-Fachhochschule Jena)

• proof of qualification (e.g. skilled worker's certificate, university degree)
• concrete job offer (e.g. fictitious employment contract)
• Company number of the future employer
