The immune system tries to fight potentially harmful microorganisms, but pathogens can evade this defense. We look at cells of the innate immune system in the fight against the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans.

During a visit to our lab, you can see how we use a state-of-the-art live cell analysis system to study how different cells of our immune system fight the human pathogenic yeast Candida albicans and the mold Aspergillus fumigatus .

We will show you how immune cells attack and devour these pathogens, but also how they sacrifice themselves to contain these threats. We will also show you how the pathogens can break free from their shackles and take on large structures that make it virtually impossible for the immune cell to eliminate the fungus - or maybe they do? You will also have the opportunity to carry out practical experiments yourself. You can count the number of viable yeast cells and visualize an important defence mechanism of these remarkable microbes yourself.
