Reduction of light pollution

Guideline adopted

The city of Jena is committed to avoiding and reducing light pollution and has therefore adopted a guideline for reducing light pollution.

The guideline is a binding recommendation for the city administration and its own companies and is intended to serve as a guide for private individuals, building owners and businesses for the environmentally friendly use of light.

The guideline regulates the use of light in public spaces and on commercial and private properties. An environmentally friendly use of artificial light can be achieved through the choice of light color, the right light control and the regulation of light intensity. The main aim is to avoid harmful effects on animals, especially insects, and to protect the night.

The guideline applies to the construction and modification of lighting installations. However, special lighting installations for cultural highlights such as the Long Night of the Sciences remain possible. Similarly, safety in public spaces remains guaranteed by adequate lighting of streets, paths and squares.

The guideline can be downloaded here.
