Our Long Night of Science event offers you a unique opportunity to discover the linguistic and cultural diversity of the Balkans. From informative introductions and practical language workshops to cultural experiences and interactive games, there is something for everyone. Come along and be inspired by the fascinating world of Balkan languages and cultures!

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Balkan languages and cultures at the Long Night of Science! Our event offers a varied program that will give you a comprehensive insight into the linguistic and cultural characteristics of this diverse region. You can look forward to exciting workshops, cultural stations, film screenings and interactive activities. 

Introduction to the history, special features and connections of the "Balkan languages"

Start your evening with an introduction to the history and special features of the Balkan languages. Learn more about the linguistic connections between the different languages of the region and their historical developments. 

Language workshops: Bulgarian and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian taster sessions

Experience the Balkan languages up close in our language workshops:
Bulgarian taster: learn basic expressions and phrases in Bulgarian. A highlight of this workshop is the short introduction to the Cyrillic script, which enables you to learn the basics of reading and writing in Bulgarian.
Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian taster: Immerse yourself in the world of Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. This workshop will teach you basic expressions and phrases to give you a first insight into these closely related languages.

Cultural stations: Music, dance and culinary delights

A feast for the senses awaits you at our cultural stations:
Traditional music and dance: enjoy a live performance by a traditional music group and join in! Let yourself be enchanted by the rousing rhythms and impressive dances and learn more about the cultural background of these performances.

Tasting of traditional dishes: Taste a variety of traditional dishes from the different Balkan countries. Learn more about the culinary traditions and the stories behind the recipes. Let yourself be surprised by the diverse aromas and flavors and discover new favorite dishes.

Short film series and discussion

Watch a selection of short films highlighting different aspects of life and culture in the Balkans. The films offer a deep insight into the daily life, traditions and challenges of the people in this region. After the screenings, you will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion with a panel of film experts and Balkanologists. Ask your questions and deepen your understanding of the topics shown and the cultural background.
