Meet Melwin Lobo
Melwin Lobo comes from India and now works at Asclepion Laser Technologies as a systems engineer and project manager.
Dear Melwin, where are you from and what brought you to Jena?
I was born in India, the country with a rich history and diverse cultures. I moved to Jena because I had a job offer here. I work as a systems engineer and project manager in Jena.
What do you like best about your company and your work?
What I like most about my job is the opportunity to contribute to innovative projects and to work with a talented team. At Asclepion, I appreciate the company’s commitment to cutting-edge technology, supportive work environment and focus on professional growth and development. The company’s collaborative atmosphere and commitment to excellence and a customer-centric approach make it a rewarding place to work.
What challenges did you face when arriving in Jena and/or onboarding at the company? How were you able to overcome these challenges?
Moving to Jena and starting work at Asclepion was difficult at first. Everything was new – the city, the job and the people. I had to learn a lot about how things work in the company.
I then got involved in local activities to deal with these challenges, make friends and get to know the city. At work, I asked my colleagues and supervisors for help, which made it easier for me to understand how things work. I spent a lot of time learning about the products we sell so I could do my job well. I made sure to be friendly and inquisitive, which helped me make friends at work. These efforts made it easier for me to find my way around the company and Jena.
What has your company been particularly good at supporting you with?
I really enjoy working at Asclepion Laser Technologies. They have been very supportive and helpful to me. They provide me with excellent training opportunities so that I can learn and grow in my job. They also help me get used to life in Germany by teaching me the language and the culture here. At work, everyone is friendly and helps each other. This positive environment makes me happy and satisfied with my work.
What are the biggest differences in everyday work and life between your home country and Jena?
Life in Jena is different from the big cities in India. Things are slower here and people have more free time. The working week is shorter, only five days, so you have time for yourself. Jena is surrounded by nature, with forests and hiking trails to explore – a contrast to the busy city life in India
If you want to live in Jena, it is important to learn the local language. It helps you get in touch with the people. Enjoy the nature here; go for walks in the forests and parks. Take part in community events to make friends and learn about local traditions. You don’t always need a car, as Jena has a good network of public transport. So plan your money wisely. Be open-minded and ready for new experiences. And don’t forget to try the local food!
What is typically German or typically Jena for you?
Jena is special to me because it is a mixture of old and new. The old buildings and the way the city looks and feels are unique. Jena is also very green, with a lot of nature in the surrounding area. The people here are friendly and open. The city is known for its education and research, which makes it a lively and interesting place. All these things make Jena characteristic and special for me.
