The healthcare system in Jena is well organised, with a wide-ranging network of general and specialist medical practices and chemists/pharmacies. Physician density in Jena, i.e. the number of inhabitants per doctor, is currently 80 (2022). This puts Jena in first place in Thuringia (German average 203). The only university medical centre (UKJ) in Thuringia is located in Jena – over 500,000 patients a year are treated here in 32 specialist clinics offering the highest levels of medical care. At the same time, the university medical centre is the largest employer in the region, employing more than 6,800 people.
If you are a skilled professional and come to Jena to work, you will be covered by health insurance, just like your German colleagues, with either state or private health insurance. The insurance company covers the cost of any necessary medical treatment if you should become ill. Children and spouses who are not in employment, or only part-time, can also be insured under family health insurance.
Everyone who is insured receives an electronic health card as proof that they have health insurance. This photo ID card needs to be presented at every medical appointment. The first point of contact for medical treatment in Jena, as in the rest of Germany, is a registered GP or consultant. You can choose any doctor in the local area i.e. if you are feeling unwell you can go to any doctor of your choice.
