Specialty glass is used in many different fields of application due to its brilliance and durability - for example, for building windows or as cover glass for smartphones. However, if the load is too high, it breaks. 100 percent shatterproof glass does not yet exist, but we at SCHOTT are getting closer and closer to this dream. By strengthening the glass, breakage can be delayed under extreme loads. If it does eventually break, it is possible to either maintain dimensional stability or keep the fragments small and less sharp. In this presentation, we will look at the various options for strengthening thick and thin glass. The load cases will be discussed using the example of application-related tests that we use for glass development. Examples from the application areas of fire-resistant glass, safety glass and display glass for smartphones round off the overview.
