The waste containers are emptied according to a fixed schedule. You can view the dates under: Disposal dates.

From December to February each year, we switch to a 14-day disposal cycle. Disposal takes place in the even calendar weeks. Weekly disposal will resume at the beginning of week 10.

Provision
The unsealed waste containers must be placed at the edge of public traffic areas (outside of roadways) by 6:00 a.m. on the day of emptying.

Alternatively, Biowaste containers can be handed in at the recycling centers. However, this is subject to a charge for approved home composting and for commercial facilities.

When dealing with the organic waste garbage can, there are always complaints about unpleasant odors in summer and problems with emptying in winter. The following tips can help:

line the bin with newspaper before filling;
Always keep the container closed;
Place the bin in a shady location;
Do not compact Biowaste containers;
Wrap Biowaste containers in newspaper;
Add Biowaste containers without liquids if possible;
Clean the 120 l organic waste garbage can with water at regular intervals.

Bags that can supposedly be thrown in the organic waste

Anyone who buys bags that can supposedly be thrown in the organic waste is not doing the environment any good - on the contrary. These bags, of all things, are difficult to compost and can only be composted under certain conditions.

Mini Biowaste container for the kitchen

We offer mini organic waste bins for the collection of kitchen and food waste in the home. The 10-liter container fits in built-in cupboards or under the sink, for example. The container can be purchased together with 10 compostable paper bags for EUR 6.50 at the ksj Service Center/Cashier's Office (Löbstedter Str. 56) and at the Service Office (Saalstraße 9). Other bags are available from retailers, but are also available from the ksj in packs of 10 for EUR 1.
Lining the bags with newspaper is an alternative to paper bags.

Home composting

Another disposal option for Biowaste containers from private households is to use a compost heap or quick composter to reuse the compost produced.

Home composting should be carried out properly and harmlessly at the source of the waste or in the immediate vicinity (i.e. on the residential property or the neighboring or opposite property). As a "self-composter", you can apply to the ksj for a reduction in the basic waste fee. If self-composting is confirmed, the reduced basic fee will be applied as of the next fee collection date. The ksj must be informed of any changes.

The fee reduction is only possible for year-round home composting, but not if an organic waste garbage can is used for disposal in addition to composting.

Making good compost

Create good aeration
Ensure contact between the compost and the soil
Avoid excessive heat
Build up the bottom layer of coarse material (drainage effect, aeration)
Always cover kitchen waste well with soil
Sprinkle soil and other rotting aids only thinly, mix thoroughly and moisten when dry
Do not keep it too wet (risk of rotting)
Do not make compost heaps too large - the material should rot, not putrefy!
Turn regularly
Cover open windrows to ensure even heat development and to protect against drying out

When setting up a compost heap, you should keep a distance of at least 10 m from the property boundary.
