Intensive care medicine is more than just medical equipment. We explain and show how patients receive "intensive" care and who looks after patients and their relatives.

What happens when a person suffers a stroke or sepsis, has a serious accident, a brain disease or an operation requires a stay in the intensive care unit? Machines are an essential part of intensive care medicine. They can seem annoying or frightening, but they serve to monitor the patient closely and are often life-saving. We show what the equipment does in the intensive care unit, as well as the work of the people who look after the patient. We also think about the time after treatment and present strategies to make it easier to deal with the experience.
