Driving license - Extension of temporary D driving license categories
Anyone driving a motor vehicle on public roads requires a permit (driving license) from the competent authority (driving license authority). The driving license is issued in certain categories. It must be evidenced by an official certificate (driving license).
Source: Section 2 (1) of the Road Traffic Act
Details
Prerequisite
You have your main residence in Jena.
Application
It is not possible to apply by proxy, as a new card driver's license must be issued as part of the renewal process, which contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not need to fill out an application form. It will be created by us and simply signed by you.
If you reach the age of 50 within the next 5 years, the extension is only possible up to this point. An extension beyond the age of 50 can only be granted if a performance psychology report is provided. When submitting your application, you must declare which body you wish to commission to prepare the psychological assessment. Once your application documents have been checked, the driving license authority will commission the expert opinion.
Apply online
It is not possible to apply online for the renewal of D categories.
Limitation of classes
With the introduction of the new driving license law on 01.01.1999, some driving license classes were limited in time. This means that certain categories are only issued for a certain period of time when they are first issued or extended, or when they are reissued after withdrawal, waiver or refusal. If these categories are to remain valid, an application must be made to extend the respective driving license categories.
The exact time limit for the driving license categories can be found in column 11 on the back of the new EU driving licenses.
Classes D1, D1E, D and DE are issued for five years, but for no longer than until the driver reaches the age of 50.
Procedure/deadlines
- Classes D1, D1E, D and DE are issued for five years, but no longer than until the age of 50. Thereafter, an extension is granted on application for five years in each case, for which a performance psychology report is required.
- The application may be submitted at the earliest 6 months before the previous driving license expires.
- The basis for determining the period of validity of the extended driving license is the date on which the driving license to be extended expires.
- A new driving license will be issued with the extension. The driving license will be produced by the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin after you have submitted your application and your documents have been checked.
Documents
- Passport or identity card
- Photograph: Please bring a photograph that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links).
- Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, a file card copy from the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is required. Please request a copy of the file card yourself from the relevant driving license authority and have it sent directly to us or faxed to us.
- Proof of sufficient eyesight: Proof by means of an expert opinion or certificate from an ophthalmologist or a company/occupational physician - an expert opinion/certificate issued is valid for two years
- Proof of medical fitness: Proof must be provided in the form of a certificate from a doctor of your choice, taking into account Annex 5 of the Driving License Ordinance. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application. The form to be completed by the doctor is available under Downloads.
- A performance psychology report is required for the renewal of categories D, D1, DE and D1E from the age of 50. The examination includes, for example, an examination of resilience, responsiveness, orientation and concentration. Proof of compliance with these special requirements is provided by an expert opinion from an officially recognized assessment body for driving fitness. The examination is commissioned by the driving license authority upon application.
- An official certificate of good conduct (document type "O") must be applied for in person by the applicant at the registration office responsible for their main place of residence (in Jena also when applying at the driving license authority), stating the purpose of use "Extension of passenger transport".
